The New Year woodblock painting is a traditional folk art with a long history of over a thousand years in China. New Year prints found its inspiration in social life, featuring a myriad of themes. The developments of woodblock printing techniques since the Tang Dynasty and urban culture in the Song Dynasty contributed to the prosperity of woodcut New Year paintings. Tongshouji woodcut New Year Painting, a provincial-level intangible cultural heritage in Anhui Province, started in 1910. As the fourth-generation inheritor of Tongshouji woodcut New Year Painting, Tong Min combines artistic style of Huizhou New Year prints and modern aesthetics in his creations, making his works rich in cultural significance with local flavor of Chinese New Year.
